David Jamir discovered his talent for music at thirteen. Just about the same time he stumbled into drugs and alcohol. The drugs and alcohol went hand in hand with his rock and roll lifestyle and before he knew it David was hooked. He was thirteen and hopelessly addicted.
He remembers the struggle vividly, “Deep down I knew I should not take the drugs but I kept doing the same thing again and again. I knew my parents would be hurt but I could not stop.” David fell deeper and deeper into the addiction. There was no professional help that he knew of at that time. A really low moment came after the repeated abuse. David felt despair and hopelessness, “There were times when I was suicidal. I could not stop the addiction. I did not want to live because I could not overcome the addiction.”
David recalls with clarity the day he cried out to God. On that day I said, “I will give you my life, my voice, my talents, my all. Lord I will give you everything .” David still remembers what happened next, “A song came into my heart. The words were, Every knee shall bow down and every tongue shall confess, He is Lord.” God is a miracle working God and after that day, a joy came into my heart. From the next day I did not even want to taste a single drop of alcohol.”
Soon after, on Christmas day David was at the home of a family member and he knelt down besides the couch and he asked God, “Lord come into my life.” David recollects the joy he felt at that moment was unparalleled. That day David recounts was the first day of his walk with God. “I was burning to help others. The Bible says, Freely you have received, freely give. I wanted to help but I know addicts don’t like control and so I opened a wisdom centre not a rehab centre. Even though I thought this will not work out and I felt like giving up many times, the verse from the Bible encouraged me, I will never leave you nor forsake you. I was strengthened by the Psalms and like King David said, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me. Thy rod and staff will comfort me. The life of Jesus inspired David and gave him hope to continue his work with other addicts. As David studied the Bible he understood that Jesus heals the broken hearted. He saw the Bible promise, I will restore the years you have lost, being fulfilled in his own life and now David wants every addict to know, “when you come back to God he restores you, he heals you, he will empower you to enjoy life again.”
