In today’s world, people are devalued for a variety of reasons – age, gender, cultural background, disabilities, appearances, economic status etc. Being devalued by the society leads not only to emotional turmoil, but reduced opportunities of livelihood, medical help, education etc.
Social Role Valorization is a framework of thinking about how all people gain rich and full lives in which their full potential can be offered and appreciated, and how applying this learning in the lives of people spark change in individual lives, communities, and society.
The theory of Social Role Valorization (SRV) reveals some of the mostly hidden ways that many groups of people in society are systematically oppressed and devalued and give us some powerful tools to address and respond. SRV acts as a reminder to use human-centred approaches in daily life, and mindfully practice inclusion of everyone while providing opportunities to the beneficiaries to find solutions to their challenges.
Social Role Valorization looks at ways to place people who have been devalued historically or culturally in valued roles to enable, establish and enhance them. It can make our world more equal for the least of them.
Although SRV has largely been applied towards assisting people with disability to lead full lives, it has many lessons and learnings for everyone about ourselves, others, and the world around us.
CBN India is organising the SRV online workshop to create awareness on practical ways of inclusion and acceptance of everyone regardless of the differences, with experts Geeta Mondol, Program Specialist, Keystone Institute India and Elizabeth Neuville, Executive Director, Keystone Institute India.
