Have you ever felt that your greatest talents were meant for something more than just yourself? For Dilum Fernando, music was that gift, a divine calling shaping his life in remarkable ways.
From childhood, music was his refuge and joy. Blessed with a talent for singing, playing instruments, and teaching, he knew his gifts were meant to be shared. He sang in choirs, including international ones, and guided young choir members in his church, nurturing their voices and hearts. But not every chapter of his life was fruitful. There were moments when dreams felt barren, yet he clung to his music as an offering to God, learning that the truest gift is the one given selflessly.
A defining moment came when he was nine. His music teacher, holding his arms, said, “You have a wonderful gift in singing. It’s rare, and you must give it only to God.” That truth became his life’s cornerstone. At eleven, he joined the choir at Holy Emmanuel Church, Moratuwa, where his passion deepened, and he felt the purpose of his gift.
At 23, Dilum composed the anthem for his church’s 150th anniversary. Seeing his music uplift and move the congregation was electrifying—proof that he was on the right path. The words of Habakkuk 3:17-18 resonated with him: “Though the fig tree may not blossom, Nor fruit be on the vines… Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.” When doubt crept in, reminding him of unfulfilled dreams and milestones unmet, this verse reminded him that fulfillment comes not from personal achievements but from glorifying God.
Now, as he continues to sing, teach, and compose, Dilum knows the greatest gifts are those that bring others closer to God. He hopes to keep using his music for God’s glory, understanding that in giving it away, he holds on to what truly matters.
