Victor Doungel, a young boy born with cerebral palsy could hear many voices telling him how inadequate he was. In today’s world it is not uncommon to hear discouraging voices dictated by trends and influencers online or offline. God’s perspective and voice is seldom at the forefront but Victor chose to make God’s voice his top most priority.
By giving God’s voice centre-stage, and holding his words close to heart, Victor was reminded that he is fearfully and wonderfully made in in His image. No matter how many flaws he appeared to have (according to the world’s perspective). Victor knew he was perfect in the eyes of his creator.
“There’s nothing to feel bad about or depressed about. This is how God created me. God has filled me with hope and encouragement to look at my life beyond my disability.” Victor received salvation (can the word ‘salvation’ be linked to https://cbnindia.org/peace-with-god/ please) at the age of ten when he heard the lyrics of the popular hymn ‘The old rugged cross’ (please link the words ‘The old rugged cross’ to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_D-TwKNEoA ) He remembers being touched by these words:
‘In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see;
For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
To pardon and sanctify me.’
Victor recalls as he began to understand the true purpose of his life, God opened up doors and presented opportunities to him to accept himself, and be kinder to himself. One such experience was meeting Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, “that meeting boosted my confidence!” God gave Victor many more opportunities to advocate for people with disabilities at conferences, events and even concerts where he performed! Not only did Victor build his own confidence but helped pave a smoother path for others in his shoes.
“God was teaching me many things, including the truth that everything happening to me was for my good, and to never lose hope and faith in Him,” said Victor brimming with confidence as he played a piece on his keyboard for us. Victor makes the daily choice of looking to God when he is feeling low or is disappointed. “I truly believe that God is my refuge, my protector, my everything. I only turn to Him,” he adds.
